GOD OF FOOTBALL! Na wa o! Southampton — Championship club, second division people wey no even dey Premier League — don beat Premier League leaders Arsenal 2-1 for FA Cup quarter-final for St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, April 4. Arsenal wey just few weeks ago been dey chase FOUR trophies for same season — Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Champions League — don lose two cup competitions back to back! Arteta must dey sit for dark room somewhere dey ask himself serious questions!

Why This Result Shock Everybody

Make we explain why this result shake football world scatter. Arsenal dey top of Premier League, nine points clear of Manchester City. Southampton dey Championship — one division BELOW Arsenal. All the bookmakers, all the pundits, all the fans — everybody believe say Arsenal go win this one comfortably. But football no be like that o!

To make matter sweeter for Southampton, this match happen exactly 50 years after dem win the famous 1976 FA Cup. Dem even wear special yellow and blue commemorative kit in honour of that history. Dem come out like say dem dey play for the ghost of 1976 — and that energy carry them throughout the whole match!

Arsenal manager Arteta make seven changes to him starting lineup, resting plenty players. Some of their best people like Bukayo Saka dey out through injury. The team no look sharp. Martin Ødegaard return to squad but e no look fully fit. 16-year-old Max Dowman get rare chance to start. Arsenal come like half-strength side — and Southampton take full advantage!

First Half — Southampton Give Arsenal Pepper

From first whistle, Southampton play like say e dey final already. Brazilian winger Leo Scienza na the man wey give Arsenal defence headache all match. E dey run, dey create, dey cause problem everywhere. The 31,000 fans for St. Mary’s dey mad with noise and passion. E look like prayer ground instead of football stadium!

Scienza get early chance but e carry ball too long and moment pass. Meanwhile, Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa dey make saves here and there as the Gunners try to find their rhythm. Things look like Arsenal go eventually settle and take over. But football no gree.

Ten minutes before halftime, the thing wey nobody expect happen. Scienza burst forward, cross the halfway line, and find right-back James Bree wey dey run. Bree advance with too much space — Arsenal defenders just dey watch am like say dem no know wetin to do. Bree clip ball to the far post. Arsenal defender Ben White — experienced England international — COMPLETELY MISJUDGE how the ball dey fly. Before White fit recover, Southampton striker Ross Stewart pounce, control am on him chest, and fire low shot past Kepa. 1-0 Southampton!

Ehhhhh! St. Mary’s nearly fall down from the noise wey follow! Arsenal go into halftime dey lose to Championship club, and the whole football world turn to watch!

Second Half — Arsenal Try Come Back, Southampton Refuse to Shift

Arsenal come out second half with more fire. Arteta bring on three substitutes at same time — Viktor Gyökeres, Calafiori, and Madueke all come in together. This show say Arteta know say dem need to change something fast fast.

Southampton nearly kill the match early in second half when Scienza cut inside and curl one beautiful shot — the ball hit the crossbar! If that one go in, match don finish be that. But football be like that sometimes — chances dey come and go.

Arsenal equalise for 68th minute. Gabriel — the big Brazilian centre-back — slip ball through to Havertz, who take quick touch before pulling back for Gyökeres to finish from close range. 1-1! Arsenal fans breathe small again. E look like normal service don resume.

But immediately after, more bad news reach Arsenal. Gabriel limp off with injury wey look like knee problem. E go need scan. Saliba come on replace am. Arsenal start to look shaky for defence again as the minutes tick down. Southampton, instead of sitting back to protect draw like many teams go do, push forward with plenty energy and belief.

85th Minute — The Dagger Wey Enter Arsenal Heart

For 85th minute, Southampton sub Tom Fellows drive forward on another quick counter-attack. Ball fall to another substitute, Shea Charles — wey just enter the pitch nine minutes before this moment. Charles need only one look. E side-foot one cool, composed shot into the bottom corner past Kepa. 2-1 Southampton!

St. Mary’s explode! Players run everywhere! Fans dey jump on top each other! Tears of joy everywhere for Southampton supporters. Pure disbelief dey show for face of Arsenal fans wey travel. Na one of those moments wey you go remember for life!

Arteta make more changes in desperation. Martinelli and Madueke miss half-chances to equalise. But Southampton hold am tight. Final whistle blow — 2-1 Southampton. Championship club don go Wembley FA Cup semi-final! And their reward na match against Manchester City wey demolish Liverpool 4-0 on same day.

Arteta Talk After — “Look for Mirror”

After match, Arteta vex — but him vex turn inward, not outward. E no blame referee. E no blame bad luck. E tell reporters plain plain say him players need to look themselves inside mirror and face the reality of their current bad form. “I no want give any excuse about the players wey no dey available or the players wey dey here with problems,” Arteta say firmly. E insist say the main focus must be accountability from within the squad.

Arteta admit say Arsenal don carry what media call “Carabao Cup final hangover” — meaning say after dem lose to Manchester City for the Carabao Cup final few weeks ago, the team never fully recover mentally. Now both domestic cups don go — FA Cup and Carabao Cup — both finish within few weeks of each other. Only Premier League and Champions League remain for this season.

Wetin This Mean for Arsenal Now

Arsenal still dey lead Premier League by nine points with eight games to play. Opta supercomputer give dem 97% chance of winning the title — which go be their FIRST Premier League title for 22 years! That na the main prize wey still dey available. Champions League quarter-final also still dey. These two big targets remain.

But the mood around the club don shift small. Two months ago, everybody dey talk of unprecedented quadruple. Now two cups don go. The title mathematics still heavily favour Arsenal — but the mental pressure dey real. They must now gather themselves, regroup, and attack the remaining Premier League games with everything dem get.

Ben White, wey misjudge that cross for Southampton first goal, go need plenty mental strength to bounce back. The senior players must lead from front. Every remaining Premier League game na final now for Arsenal.

For Southampton — Joy Pass Description

Meanwhile for Southampton, pure celebration dey reign! Second-tier club don go Wembley semi-final! Manager Tonda Eckert and him players do something wey nobody expect. Dem beat two Premier League clubs — Fulham and now Arsenal — for same FA Cup campaign while dem still dey Championship. Dem no do this kind thing since 1975-76 — when Southampton themselves win the FA Cup! History dey repeat itself for St. Mary’s!

Na this kind thing dey make football the greatest game for this world. Southampton — giant killers! Arteta — go sit down think am! ThePidginBlog dey hail una for Southampton!
